180g Vinyl Debut Album from Trio of Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper!
After playing live together since 2008, Sasha Dobson, Norah Jones and CatherinePopper have at last taken their collaboration into the studio for their debutalbum, No Fools, No Fun.
While she’s released five studio albums, sold 40 million albums and won 9Grammys, Norah Jones can’t seem to get enough of changing things up! By ourcount, this is the 100th recording project with which she’s been involved inthis short century, so it’s safe to say she’s a serial collaborator. And shekills ’em all. Puss N Boots is no different: a trio of like-minded gals thatfinds Ms. Jones combining forces with pals Sasha Dobson – a fixture on the NYCsinger songwriter scene and a frequent NoJo cohort – and Catherine Popper – anoted bass player who’s played with Ryan Adams, Jack White and Grace Potter -for a fun-filled female trio. Their album No Fools, No Fun is a combo of classiccountry tunes (Johnny Cash, George Jones covers) and roots rock pearls (NeilYoung, the Band) with more recent alt-country faves (Wilco, Jeb Loy Nichols) andoriginal songs from each of the members that all simmers together right nice fora proper musical stew.
Recorded at Studio G in Brooklyn with engineer/mixer Joel Hamilton, No Fools, NoFun includes five original songs two each from Dobson and Popper and one fromJones and seven spirited cover tunes, all culled from Puss n Boots liverepertoire. The 12-song collection takes its name from the lyrics of BullRider, a Rodney Crowell song made famous by Johnny Cash. Bull Rider is one ofthree album tracks that Puss n Boots recorded live in June of 2013 at The BellHouse. Over the years, they have also performed at the Bridge School Benefit, played stadiums with the Beastie Boys on the Get Out The Vote tour and joinedWilco onstage at Madison Square Garden, singing background vocals on Jesus,Etc., a song that Puss n Boots interprets on No Fools, No Fun.
We had talked about recording for a long time. A listen to the liverecordings of one of the Bell House shows gave us a kick in the pants, saysCatherine Popper. The record is a snapshot of what we do, warts and all.
Down By The River is one of my all time favorite Neil Young recordings andI’ve always had this fantasy of playing it and rocking the guitar solo, recalls Norah Jones. I never really thought I’d have the guts to do it, butthat’s sort of what this band has always been about, trying new things. Wealways egg each other on, whether it was Sasha playing drums, or Cat singing anoriginal song for the first time on stage.
We have always thrived on our live performance. We rage onstage, saysSasha Dobson. Its exciting to think the positive energy thats created fromthis band could reach beyond a small club in Brooklyn.
