Featuring a double album and its companion piece, a self-penned 84-page graphicnovel, Wayne Shorter’s Emanon is the definitive look into his artisticmultiverse. The set includes four studio tracks performed by Shorter’s quartet (pianistDanilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade) and the expansive,34-piece Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, in addition to a 6-track live albumfeaturing the quartet itself.
The deluxe set is housed in an expertly crafted box and includes three CDs andthree 180g vinyl LPs. In her introduction, Esperanza Spalding writes, “Afterreading and listening to Emanon, you might begin to notice alternative realitiesglimmering beneath the everyday world around you.”
“…youre free to listen and unleash your own imagination as you absorb therichly cinematic music that swirls together improv jazz and scored classical. Ifyoure a film score fan you can easily hear and see scene transitionsfade insand outs, quick cuts and action-based rhythmic and percussive explosions…
“The Wayne Shorter Quartet performs the two plus hours of music accompanied forthe first half hour or so by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. The quartet andorchestra perform in the studio the turbulent Pegasus, Prometheus Unbound,Lotus and the contemplative The Three Marias. The quartet (Shorter, DaniloPerez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade) performs live in London The Three Marias,Lost and Orbits Medley, Lotus, She Moves Through the Fair, AdventuresAboard the Golden Mean and Prometheus Unbound…
“The orchestral performances are impressive and majestic but I found the 3rd LPand CDs fiery live quartet performances (perhaps thats why the 3rd LP jacket, and 3rd LP and CD labels are a fiery orange?) the most exciting, with Shorternot just Prometheus unbound.
“The packaging, presentation and sound are all superlative. Contained within anLP sized slip case are the 3 LPs mastered by Bernie Grundman and pressed at RTI,the smaller die-cut heavy cardboard book(let) composed of separate sections thatare bound together with a minimalist section of gauze-tape that leaves unboundand visible the individual sections, within which are the 3 CDs. The smallerbooklet slides into an appropriately sized compartment. If this booklet doesntwin the Grammy for packaging, I cannot begin to imagine what might top it.
“The recorded sound, both in the studio and live, by Rob Griffin and ToddWhitelock is spectacularly transparent, dynamic and three-dimensional andGriffins mix is flawless and endlessly tasteful. The musically and sonicallyspectacular finale of Prometheus Unbound will set you free.
“No wonder the L.A. and Orange County Audio Society awarded this its first everARYA (Audiophile Recording of the Year Award).”
“Other than misspelling the word obedience as obediance Emanon is aflawlessly conceived, recorded and produced package that at one time, not thatlong ago, I would have thought could only exist in an alternative universe wherevinyl records ruled. It took the courage of a Pegasus to take action, but herewe are! You can now stream Emanon, but to me thats like watching pornographyinstead of making love.” – Michael Fremer, Analog Planet, January 25,2019, 11/11 Music, 11/11 Sound!
